About Wellington High School
Wellington High School is one of the most urban of the schools. Located in the centre of Wellington, it is near the shopping streets, the main New Zealand museum, Te Papa, and the Civic Centre. Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and has a population of approximately 400 thousand people.
The school has a well-established international programme that caters for 70+ students from Year 9 – 13 (ages 13 – 18). Liberal and forward thinking, the school is well known for its innovative curriculum and student management approach.
High expectations and inspiring, collaborative classrooms promote resilience and learners who are passionate about making the world a better place. The extensive curriculum has particular strengths in technology, art and design, science and outdoor education. Fashion design is delivered to a high level and is a popular subject. The large English Language department provides classes for all levels. Students are encouraged to get involved in a wide choice of co-curricular cultural and sporting activities where they can become part of the school community. Students are housed with longstanding, caring homestay families and the International staff provide a welcoming and supportive hub for students from more than 16 countries, who attend the school from one term to five years.
Students live with host families who live 5 – 30 minutes away by bus.
Sports: The school has a multi-sports gymnasium and also external fields for practicing rugby, football (soccer), hockey, basketball, athletics and volleyball.
Disciplines: As well as the standard subjects of Maths, the Sciences and English there is a diversity of disciplines offered, they are: Art, Design, Photography, Design Visual Communication, Business Studies, Digital Technology, Sonic Arts, Drama, Economics, Media Studies, Journalism, Geography, Horticulture, History, Hospitality, Furniture & Cabinet Making, Information Technology, Music, Physical Education, Basketball, Outdoor Education, Earth & Space Science and Fashion Design. Students can choose five of these disciplines.
